Decimal Degrees to DMS Converter

To convert decimal degrees to DMS, keep the whole number as the degrees, multiply the remaining fraction by 60 to get minutes, then multiply the remaining fraction of the minutes by 60 to get seconds. This converter does it instantly, adds the correct N, S, E or W, and can convert a whole pasted list. It runs in your browser, so your coordinates stay on your device.

Convert many coordinates at once

One coordinate pair per line, latitude first, in decimal degrees. Separate the two values with a comma, tab or space.

How to convert decimal degrees to DMS

  1. Enter decimal degrees. Type the latitude and longitude, for example 40.689306 and -74.044500. Negative values mean south or west.
  2. Choose the output. Pick how many decimals to show on the seconds and whether you want the hemisphere letter after, before, or a minus sign.
  3. Click Convert. The DMS result appears with a copy button, plus a link to open the point in Google Maps.
  4. Or convert a list. Paste many pairs, one per line, then copy the results or download a CSV.

The decimal degrees to DMS method

Take the decimal value and work from left to right:

degrees = whole part of the number
minutes = whole part of (fraction x 60)
seconds = (remaining fraction of minutes) x 60

Worked example

Convert 40.689306. Degrees: 40. The fraction 0.689306 x 60 = 41.35836, so minutes are 41. The remaining 0.35836 x 60 = 21.50, so seconds are 21.50. The result is 40°41′21.50″ N. For -74.044500 the same steps give 74°02′40.20″, and because the value is negative the hemisphere is W.

Choosing seconds precision

Seconds decimalsApproximate ground resolution
0 (whole seconds)about 30 metres
1about 3 metres
2about 0.3 metres
3about 3 centimetres

The figures are for latitude; a second of longitude shrinks toward the poles. Rounding is handled carefully: if seconds round up to 60 the minutes carry over, and minutes carry into degrees, so you never see a value like 12′60″.

Output styles

Different organisations write DMS differently, so the tool offers three styles: hemisphere letter after the value (40°41′21.50″ N), hemisphere letter before (N 40°41′21.50″), and a signed value with a minus sign (-40°41′21.50″). Pick the one your form, chart or report expects.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert decimal degrees to DMS?

The whole number is the degrees. Multiply the fractional part by 60; the whole number of that result is the minutes. Multiply the remaining fraction by 60 to get the seconds. For example 40.689306 becomes 40°41′21.50″.

How do I convert 40.689306 to degrees, minutes and seconds?

0.689306 x 60 = 41.35836 gives 41 minutes, and 0.35836 x 60 = 21.50 gives 21.50 seconds. The answer is 40°41′21.50″ N.

What does a negative decimal degree mean in DMS?

A negative latitude is south (S) and a negative longitude is west (W). The DMS value itself is written without a minus sign and carries the hemisphere letter instead, unless you choose the signed style.

How accurate is the conversion?

The conversion is exact apart from rounding the seconds to the number of decimals you choose. Two decimals of a second is roughly 0.3 metres.

Can I convert many coordinates at once?

Yes. Paste one latitude, longitude pair per line, click Convert list and copy the results or download a CSV. Lines that cannot be read are flagged with the reason.

Why do I sometimes see 59.99 seconds rounded up?

When seconds round to 60 the converter carries the extra into minutes, and minutes into degrees, so the output is always valid.

Which style should I use: N 40° or 40° N?

Both mean the same thing. Aviation, surveying and mapping standards vary, so choose whichever your form or software expects. A signed value is common in spreadsheets.

Does this send my coordinates to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the coordinates stay on your device.
