Convert a GeoJSON file to a CSV table for Excel or Google Sheets. Every feature becomes a row with longitude, latitude, the geometry type and one column per property. Nested properties are flattened and an optional WKT column keeps the full shape of lines and polygons. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
- Free, no signup
- Excel-friendly UTF-8
- Optional WKT column
- Runs in your browser: no upload
No file handy? Download a sample GeoJSON with a point, a line and polygons (one with a hole).
How to convert GeoJSON to CSV
- Load the file. Drop a .geojson or .json file onto the box above, or click it to browse. It can be a FeatureCollection, a single Feature or a bare geometry.
- Check the preview. The page shows the first rows of the table it will write: coordinates, geometry type and one column per property.
- Choose the options. Decide what the longitude and latitude columns hold for lines and polygons, whether to add a WKT column, how nested properties are handled, and which separator to use.
- Download. Click Download CSV. Open it in Excel, Google Sheets or any database tool.
What the CSV contains
Every feature becomes one row. The columns are:
| Column | What it holds |
|---|---|
| longitude, latitude | Decimal degrees. For a point this is the point itself. For lines and polygons it is the first vertex, or the approximate centre (the mean of the vertices) if you choose that. |
| geometry_type | Point, LineString, Polygon, or a Multi type. |
| elevation | Added only when the first vertex has a non-zero Z value. |
| feature_id | Added only when the features have an id. |
| One column per property | Every key in properties. Features that lack a key get an empty cell. |
| wkt | Optional. The full geometry in Well-Known Text, so lines and polygons are not reduced to a single point. It is 2D. |
Lines and polygons
A spreadsheet row holds one pair of coordinates, so a line or polygon cannot be written out vertex by vertex in the longitude and latitude columns. The page keeps the shape in the WKT column and puts one representative position in longitude and latitude, so you can still map or sort the rows. Treat that position as a label point, not as a measurement: the mean of the vertices is not guaranteed to lie inside a polygon.
Nested properties
GeoJSON properties can contain objects and lists, which a flat table cannot. With Flatten nested properties ticked (the default), an object such as {"address": {"city": "Bhilwara"}} becomes a column called address.city. Lists are written as JSON text in one cell. Untick the option to write each nested object as JSON text in a single column instead.
Common problems and how to fix them
Accented characters look broken in Excel
Leave Excel-friendly UTF-8 ticked. It adds a byte-order mark so Excel reads names such as Café correctly.
Everything lands in one column
Some regional versions of Excel expect a semicolon as the separator. Change the separator to Semicolon and download again.
Text starting with an apostrophe
Text that begins with =, +, - or @ gets an apostrophe in front, so a spreadsheet does not run it as a formula. Plain numbers are not changed.
Polygons have only one coordinate
That is how a table works. Tick Add a WKT column to keep the full shape.
The page says the coordinates are not longitude/latitude
GeoJSON uses WGS 84 longitude and latitude. Large numbers mean the file is in a projection. Reproject it first with the CRS Converter.
What this converter does and does not do
- One row per feature. A MultiPoint or MultiPolygon is one row, with its first vertex or centre in the coordinate columns and every part in the WKT column.
- Elevation is written only for the first vertex, and is not part of the WKT.
- CSV only. For an Excel workbook, open the CSV in Excel and save it as .xlsx.
- Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and there is no signup, so the practical size limit is your computer's memory.
GeoJSON or CSV: what is the difference?
GeoJSON is a map format with real geometry and nested properties. A CSV is a flat table that opens in any spreadsheet or database. Convert to CSV to work with the attributes in a spreadsheet, to count or filter features, or to share the data with someone who does not use GIS software. To make a map from a table again, use CSV to GeoJSON.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert GeoJSON to CSV?
Drop the .geojson or .json file onto the converter, check the preview, set the options, then click Download CSV.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
It is free and needs no account or signup. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded to a server.
What happens to lines and polygons?
Each is one row. The longitude and latitude columns hold the first vertex, or the approximate centre if you choose that, and the WKT column holds the full shape.
What is the WKT column?
Well-Known Text, a standard text form of a geometry, for example POLYGON ((74.6 25.35, ...)). Many GIS tools and databases read it, so the full shape survives in a CSV. It is 2D.
Are nested properties flattened?
Yes, by default. A nested object becomes columns named like address.city, and lists become JSON text. Untick the option to write each nested object as JSON text in one column.
What if features have different properties?
The table has a column for every property found in any feature, and a feature that lacks one gets an empty cell.
Is elevation kept?
If the first vertex of a feature has a non-zero Z value, an elevation column is added. Elevation is not written inside the WKT.
Can Excel open the file?
Yes. Leave Excel-friendly UTF-8 ticked so accents read correctly. Choose a semicolon separator if your Excel puts everything in one column.
Why do some values start with an apostrophe?
Text that begins with =, +, - or @ gets an apostrophe in front, so a spreadsheet does not run it as a formula. Plain numbers are not changed.
What does the approximate centre mean?
The mean of all vertices. It is quick and good as a label position, but for an unusual polygon it can fall outside the shape.
Does it keep the feature id?
Yes, in a feature_id column, when the features have an id.
Why does it say the coordinates are not longitude/latitude?
GeoJSON uses WGS 84 longitude and latitude. Values outside -180 to 180 for longitude or -90 to 90 for latitude mean the file is in a projection such as UTM or Web Mercator. Reproject it to WGS 84 first.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit, but the work happens in your browser's memory. Very large files can be slow, especially on a phone.
How do I turn the CSV back into GeoJSON?
Use CSV to GeoJSON, which detects the latitude and longitude columns and writes points.
