To convert bigha to acres, choose the state, enter the number of bigha and click Convert. A bigha is not one fixed size: it is 27,225 sq ft (0.625 acre) in Rajasthan and Bihar, 14,400 sq ft (0.3306 acre) in West Bengal and Assam, and 8,712 sq ft (0.2 acre) in Himachal Pradesh. The converter also works backwards from acres or hectares, accepts your own bigha size, and runs in your browser.

How to convert bigha to acres
- Pick the region. The size of a bigha depends on where the land is. Choose the state or country; the size in square feet is shown in the list and a note explains it. If your records give a different size, type it into Custom size.
- Enter the value and the unit. Type the number of bigha, or switch the unit to acres, hectares or square feet to convert the other way.
- Click Convert. The result appears in acres, hectares, square feet, square yards and square metres, with the biswa or katha count for the region. Each line has a copy button.
- Or convert a list. Paste many values, one per line, and download the table as a CSV.
The formula
acres = bigha × (square feet in one bigha) / 43,560 bigha = acres × 43,560 / (square feet in one bigha)
Everything on this page goes through square feet, using the exact definitions 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft and 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m². Only the size of the bigha changes from place to place.
Size of a bigha by region
| Region | Sq ft | Acres | Per acre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rajasthan (pucca) | 27,225 | 0.625 | 1.6 |
| Bihar | 27,225 | 0.625 | 1.6 |
| Uttar Pradesh | 27,000 | 0.6198 | 1.613 |
| West Bengal | 14,400 | 0.3306 | 3.025 |
| Assam | 14,400 | 0.3306 | 3.025 |
| Madhya Pradesh | 12,000 | 0.2755 | 3.63 |
| Himachal Pradesh | 8,712 | 0.2 | 5 |
| Bangladesh | 14,400 | 0.3306 | 3.025 |
| Nepal (Terai) | 72,900 | 1.6736 | 0.598 |
The converter uses these sizes. Notes on each are shown under the region list, including values that other sources give for the same state. "Per acre" is the number of bigha in one acre. For Uttar Pradesh the figure is the most commonly quoted one.
Worked example: 10 bigha
| Region | Acres | Hectares |
|---|---|---|
| Rajasthan (pucca) | 6.25 acres | 2.5293 ha |
| West Bengal | 3.3058 acres | 1.3378 ha |
| Madhya Pradesh | 2.7548 acres | 1.1148 ha |
| Himachal Pradesh | 2 acres | 0.8094 ha |
For Rajasthan: 10 × 27,225 / 43,560 = 6.25 acres. For West Bengal: 10 × 14,400 / 43,560 = 3.3058 acres. The same ten bigha therefore differ by almost a factor of two between states.
Why different websites give different answers
- There is no national standard. A bigha was fixed by local rulers and revenue systems, and it can change between districts and between pucca and kachcha measures in the same state. Rajasthan, for example, has a pucca bigha of 27,225 sq ft and a smaller kachcha bigha, published as 17,424 sq ft.
- Uttar Pradesh has several. The 27,000 sq ft figure is the one most often quoted, but other published values include 6,806.25 and 9,075 sq ft in some western districts and 27,225 sq ft in eastern UP and Lucknow.
- Some pages mix them up. Figures for the same state range from 12,000 sq ft to a full acre of 43,560 sq ft for Madhya Pradesh, and some pages give one factor for the whole country. This page uses the land-record figure and tells you where it is uncertain.
- The remedy is to use your own record. Enter the size from your land record in Custom size and the page does the arithmetic.
How to find the bigha size for your land
- Check the unit definitions printed in your state land records portal (for example the khatauni, jamabandi or Bhulekh extract) or ask the local patwari or revenue office.
- Ask whether the record uses pucca or kachcha bigha, and which district table applies.
- Where the record also gives the area in hectares or square metres, use that figure for legal purposes and treat the bigha as a convenience.
Common mistakes
- Using one factor for every state. A bigha is 0.625 acre in Rajasthan and 0.33 acre in West Bengal. Choose the right region.
- Mixing pucca and kachcha. Check which one your record uses.
- Rounding too early. Convert with the full factor and round the final answer. 0.33 acre per bigha instead of 0.3306 is an error of about 0.2% (on 1,000 bigha it is about 0.6 acre out).
- Confusing katha and biswa with their sub-units. They also differ by region; see the katha to square feet page.
What this converter does and does not do
- Presets, not law. The sizes are the commonly documented ones for each region. They are not a substitute for the definition in your own land record, and they do not cover every district.
- Exact arithmetic. Given a size, the conversion uses the exact definitions 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft and 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m².
- No legal or valuation advice. Use the area in your registered documents for any transaction.
- Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I use the result for a sale, a loan or a court case?
Treat it as a working figure. Use the area written in your registered deed, jamabandi or khatauni, and ask the revenue office or a licensed surveyor when the exact area matters. This page is not legal or valuation advice.
Can I convert a list of values?
Yes. Paste one number per line, click Convert list, then copy the results or download them as a CSV. The unit, region and custom size you picked apply to every line, and lines that cannot be read are flagged with the reason.
