The formula

square feet = katha × (square feet in one katha)

Only the size of one katha changes between places. Results use the exact definitions 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft and 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m².

Assam's katha is four times as large as a West Bengal katha, because an Assam bigha has 5 katha and a West Bengal bigha has 20. Bihar's official katha is 1,361.25 sq ft (20 dhur), but some districts use others; published figures include 1,901 sq ft in Muzaffarpur and 3,267 sq ft in West Champaran. Choose Custom for those.

Worked example: 5 katha

Bihar 5 × 1,361.25 = 6,806.25 sq ft (632.32 m², 0.1563 acre)
West Bengal 5 × 720 = 3,600 sq ft (334.45 m², 0.0826 acre)
Assam 5 × 2,880 = 14,400 sq ft (1,337.80 m², 0.3306 acre, 1 bigha)

Common mistakes

  • Using a Bihar katha in West Bengal. The two differ by almost a factor of two (1,361.25 against 720 sq ft).
  • Using a West Bengal katha in Assam. An Assam katha is 2,880 sq ft, four times bigger.
  • Assuming 20 katha per bigha everywhere. That holds in Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Bangladesh and Nepal, but an Assam bigha has 5 katha.
  • Ignoring district variation. Check the katha defined in your own record.

What this converter does and does not do

  • Presets, not law. The sizes are the commonly documented ones. They are not a substitute for the definition in your land record and do not cover every district.
  • Exact arithmetic. Given a size, the conversion is exact.
  • No legal or valuation advice. Use the area in your registered documents for any transaction.
  • Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
