Guntha and cent

A cent is 1/100 of an acre, or 435.6 sq ft, so 1 guntha is 2.5 cents. The cent is used in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and the guntha (or gunta) mainly in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Gujarat. This page converts between them directly.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing guntha with cent. 1 guntha is 1,089 sq ft but 1 cent is 435.6 sq ft.
  • Using 100 guntha per acre. It is 40.
  • Mixing the guntha with the "are". An are is 100 m² (about 1,076 sq ft), close to but not the same as a guntha (about 101.17 m²).
  • Using the bigha or katha factor. Those differ by state, but a guntha does not.

What this converter does and does not do

  • Fixed definition. The guntha is taken as exactly 1/40 acre (1,089 sq ft).
  • Exact arithmetic. The conversion uses the exact definitions 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft and 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m².
  • No legal or valuation advice. Use the area in your registered documents for any transaction.
  • Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
